 If that sounds like you, then join “Coffee & Talk: The Korean Chat Club!” Enjoy a cup of coffee while chatting in Korean with Korean teachers and native speakers as well as your friends✨ You may not be able to travel to Korea right away, but at our Korean Café, you’ll experience the magic of being in Korea while sipping coffee with a Korean speakers.

🗣️ Casual, Free-Talking Sessions → No fixed topics—just a relaxed environment to practice speaking Korean.

Questions are welcome! → Feel free to ask any questions you have about learning Korean.

📢 100% Korean-only rule! → You may use English or French only when asking questions.

📚 Literature Club May Session Registration (Click!)

In the Spring 2025 Luxembourg King Sejong Institute Literature Club, we will explore four Korean literary works to gain a deeper understanding of Korean society, culture, and language through engaging discussions and in-depth analyses. This book club is designed for learners of Korean who wish to enhance their Korean language skills while gaining insight into Korean literature, society, and culture. However, people who don't have any knowledge of the Korean language can participate and engage in discussions which will be done in English or French.

Participants will read Korean novels using their preferred translated versions and engage in discussions to share diverse perspectives and interpretations.


📚 May Book Selection <Almond> by Sohn Won-pyung

Almond is an internationally acclaimed Korean novel that tells the story of Yunjae, a boy who has alexithymia—a condition that makes it difficult for him to feel or express emotions like fear or anger. Through Yunjae’s unique perspective, the novel explores themes of empathy, emotional growth, and human connection in a world that often demands conformity and emotional responsiveness. Simple yet deeply moving, Almond invites readers to reflect on the meaning of understanding others beyond words and appearances. It is a perfect introduction to contemporary Korean literature and offers profound insights into the complexity of emotions and the importance of compassion in modern society.


 

Exploring Korean Society Through Baeksang Award-Winning Directors

This semester, our movie club will explore Korean society through the lens of six films that won the Best Director Award at the Baeksang Arts Awards. These films are not only critically acclaimed but also showcase the unique vision of their directors, offering a deep exploration of Korea’s social landscape, historical contexts, and cultural shifts.


By analyzing these films, we will examine how the directors convey their messages and perspectives on Korean society—from personal identity crises to class struggles, religious dilemmas, and political power structures. Each film serves as a reflection of Korea’s past, present, and future, allowing us to engage in meaningful discussions about the country’s evolving social fabric.


As we watch and discuss these films together, we will explore how the directors perceive Korean society and what messages they seek to convey.


Through themes such as personal growth and identity, class struggles, religious conflicts, and political power structures, these films offer us a unique opportunity to examine Korea’s past, present, and future.

By engaging with these movies, we can gain a deeper understanding of Korean history and culture, as well as explore the country’s distinctive perspectives and social issues. Let’s come together to share insights, exchange ideas, and create an enriching and meaningful experience!

🎬 May Movie Selection Masquerade by Choo Chang-min (2012)

Masquerade is a historical drama set in the Joseon Dynasty, inspired by the reign of King Gwanghae.Amidst political turmoil and threats of assassination, a commoner named Ha-seon, who looks identical to the king, is brought into the palace to serve as his double.

The film poses profound questions about the nature of power, justice, and true leadership, portraying how an ordinary man transforms as he temporarily assumes the role of king.With its grand cinematography, intricate storytelling, and Lee Byung-hun’s remarkable performance, Masqueradereceived critical acclaim both in Korea and internationally.
